BuyTogether – New website

A great looking website for an excellent and much needed service in the property sales sector.

buyTogether was founded by businessmen Tim Sheahan and Gerry Kidd and aims, in a nutshell, to represent and negotiate on behalf the buyer in property sales. A new concept in the Irish property market! (And one that would have been welcomed a few short years ago!) There are 5 different services available:

  • Group buying brings a group of buyers together with the common goal of buying their own properties in a development – the group results is some serious bargaining power!
  • Single home buyers can also harness the negotiating experience of buyTogether to potentially gain significant reductions in house price.
  • The property Search & Select service aims takes the drudgery and heartache out of finding and buying the perfect home for you – buyTogether can do it all for you!
  • Developments - this is an interesting and timely idea which looks for opportunities in unfinished developments around the country.
  • And finally buyTogether also offer their skills for negotiation and renegotiation of rents and leases in the commercial sector. I know a few people straight off the bat that would seem some very tangible value in getting a few percentage points knocked off their leases!!

So – there’s a lot of very useful offerings available from the team at buyTogether. One of the challenges for us was creating a homepage that not only looked good (easy for us!) but also gave all 5 offerings equal footing with the just the right level of information to explain to but not overload with information  - (not as easy!). In the end, after a lot of design work, some user testing and a few tweaks here and there we pulled it off and we, but most importantly, our clients are delighted with the results. Check out the buyTogether homepage.

Also you might notice on the homepage is video – which aims to explain simply and clearly what buyTogether do.  It also gives you, the visitor, a chance to meet Gerry Kidd, one of the founders and get a sense of the people behind the company – available, knowledgeable and approachable.

The Mortgage  Savings Calculator

The perfect execution of the mortgage savings calculator was paramount. It shows not only your mortgage repayments and stamp duty but also what potential savings you make across the board if you are able knock of a few percentage points form the asking price. We all surprised to learn after some of research that many of the mortgage calculators across a range of high profile property and banking websites simply didn’t work; with inaccuracies in stamp duty the most common issue. Tim Sheahan had spent some time developing the mathematics behind the buyTogether calculator and it was up to us to ensure that it went from Excel to WordPress without a hitch. Our big thanks go out to Alan O’Reilly from Tidy.ie who worked his magic (several times) in the development of the calculator for the website. It is an extremely handy little tool and it works. Be sure to check it out.

Other bits…

There are lots of small pockets of goodness throughout the rest of the site notably the eNewsletter form that deposits the subscribers details directly in Mail Chimp’s (our eNewsletter software of choice) mailing list database. There is a also a nice little widget at the end of selected pages and posts that allows you to share the page/post socially through facebook, twitter, etc. And of course there are some excellent examples of registration forms – about five! – that can be modified and processed all within the WordPress administration area. Handy indeed. Oooh and did we mention that we designed the logo as well?

We will leave you with words from Gerry and Tim on their experience working with Cookie Web. Thanks guys!

In writing our brief for our new website we had a good idea of what we wanted to achieve but really had no idea how to deliver the end product. We had spoken to many wed designers and received quotations which really tested our budget. From a chance meeting at an Kilcock Business Association presentation, we were fortunate to enlist the services of Heidi and Orla at Cookie Web Consulting.

From our very first consultation they grasped our business idea and understood our requirements, perhaps even better than we did ourselves. Together we have developed a website that ticks all the boxes and we are looking forward to using it as the shop window of our business. We have received many commendations from business associates regarding the look, ‘feel’ and usability of the site, which is testament to the professionalism of Heidi and Orla.

The calculator is a very important element of our website and its development and user friendly presentation as a unique tool within the financial services sector owes much to the girls expertise. We have no hesitation in recommending Cookie Web Consulting and we look forward to further developing our website as our business expands.

Cartell and NMR – New Websites

I’m quite excited about this launch as the project was a bit different to our usual website projects. When we were first approached by the guys in Cartell.ie we were asked to do a very simple holding page-esque site for the National Mileage Register. We obviously impressed because a short time later they were asking us about their Cartell website and what improvements we would suggest. Redesign!!! Yaay :) So myself and Heidi started working with the Cartell team and it was full steam ahead – review and improve the Information Architecture, redesign the look and feel of the site, introduce a blog area (these guys have lots of nice tips and interesting motor/mileage things to talk about).

There is a lot of custom built functionality on the site so pairing that technology with a content management system required a bit more thought than usual. But after reviewing numerous CMS systems, Cookie Web and the Cartell IT team agreed that WordPress was the way to go. You just can’t beat the simplicity and ease of use of WordPress when it comes to updating the content on your website. This was a big factor in the project as we really wanted each department to take ownership of their content and have the ability to update it and keep it fresh. And that’s exactly what they’re doing.

We’re delighted with the new website and so are they, another happy client! See what Nicola has to say about working with Cookie Web:

We needed to redesign and update Cartell’s website for quite sometime. We finally took the crunch when we saw Orla and Heidi’s previous work. Their expertise and talent put our minds at ease knowing Cartell was in the right hands. From day one Orla and Heidi’s professionalism and enthusiasm helped us determine what we wanted with the new design. The finished product has exceeded our wish list for the new Cartell website. We would highly recommend Cookie Web to anyone who is looking for excellent quality and service.

Tune in to Newstalk’s Motor Mouth show every Monday night where Cartell’s Jeff Aherne is a weekly Motoring Correspondent. If you miss the show don’t worry as Jeff publishes a blog post about the main topic after the show.

National Mileage Register

Since we were redesigning the cartell.ie website we persuaded the team to let us update the nmr.ie website too and bring it into line with their new styling. Cartell operate the National Mileage Register for Ireland so it makes sense for the NMR website to follow the brand and look and feel of the Cartell website. We created a new logo for the site which incorporates an odometer graphic and helps capture the essence of the site’s subject matter. The homepage has been designed in a similar style to the Cartell site and we have kept the same colour scheme in both sites.

Guitar Festival – online beautifully & quickly

Orla and I are big music fans and I’d be especially fond of guitars – in almost all genres. So Conor Mulhall was always going to get a good reception when he called up late one afternoon in some what desperate need for a great looking website to promote the newly established National Irish Guitar Festival. He told us straight up that their budget was tight so I knew fairly quickly that we’d be working with our ‘oatmeal’ website package. And that’s cool – it just means that some functionality and style is limited. We had a to a juggle a few of the requirements to fit in with the budget but I knew that we could definitely deliver something great for them. And so we did!! Check it out!

Irish Guitar Festival - click to launch image website

We’ve enjoyed working with Conor tremendously and admire the amount of work that he and his people have been putting in to get the festival up and running. It looks like it’s going to be great! There are some awesome musicians lined up to play over the 5 days – and we’ve added in plenty of YouTube video clips within the biographies of the performers to give you an idea of their style. Orla and I will be there for sure! And as the festival is based in Drogheda we’ll be taking advantage of some pretty amazing accommodation package deals available.

Conor seems pretty chuffed with the website too:

We needed a website produced fast and within a tight budget and one that met all of our needs to promote our festival accordingly.
From the very first phone conversation, I felt confident and assured that Cookie Web could provide exactly what I needed….and they did. I would recommend Cookie Web to anyone!

Online Shop for Beautiful Boutique

Although tucked away in Castlepollard, County Westmeath, ladies trek from all over to visit Trinity Boutique which stocks stunning dresses and occasion wear from international designers like Frank Usher, Quintesse, Claudia Stevens and Gina Bacconi. Alongside their collection of designer dresses Trinity have a gorgeous selection of bags, shrugs, shawls and gloves and other accessories. Owner, Nancy Gilsenan wanted a website that advertised their location and clothing collections but also needed an online shop for customers to buy handbags and other accessories that might not require a physical fitting. Check out their beautiful new shop at www.trinityboutique.net.

Impressed with Presta

Cookie Web were delighted to have opportunity to try out a new ecommerce solution that we’d been keeping our eye on. Prestashop is an open source (our favourite!) ecommerce solution that suits us very well. It’s free to download, has a thriving community of developers and is quick and easy to deploy. All of these things are very important but being Cookie Web we  needed the ability to create something beautiful as well. Creating a gorgeous and unique template in Prestashop is straightforward and enjoyable (nothing more frustrating to a developer than flailing around in poorly executed software). As with most open source software there is room for improvement and we have recommended several to the Presta team. For instance the necessity for a very plain, sandbox style template as their default offering is a little over blown. But all in all we’re big fans and we’ll be launching another ecommerce shop developed in Presta in the coming weeks.

Trinity Boutique Online Shop Trinity Boutique Product List Trinity Boutique Product Detail

One Website – Two Solutions

The main website is developed with WordPress with a link to the Presta Shop within subdomin – you’ll see though that both website and shop are site sit together seamlessly. While some clients baulk at having two separate logins – one to update their main website and another to administer their shop we recommend it. Better to have to separate pieces of software that do an excellent niche job rather than a bloated software solution that does everything you could ever imagine (and a lot more than you would ever want) and is a big pain to upgrade and maintain.

A Speaking Gig @ WordCamp

WordCamp - It's gonna be great!I’m not one to brag or anything (ahem) but I am quite chuffed at being selected to be part of a panel at the upcoming WordCamp in Kilkenny next month! Orla and I were dead excited when we heard about the event as we are both WordPress nuts. Imagine a whole weekend of listening, learning, drinking, eating, breathing WordPress. Whooo!! But to be asked to take part as a speaker has elevated the event to a new level of coolness. For me I mean – not necessarily for attendees or anything :D

The panel will be discussing WordPress User Case Scenarios and we’ll be looking at the strengths and hurdles involved in using WordPress for charity sites, community sites and news-driven sites. I will be discussing my beloved Our Kilcock website – the community website for local events, news, and comments on everything that is Kilcock. Run on WordPress and whatever steam I have left over from a hard days work at Cookie Web.

So if you’re a WordPress user or you want to be or if you develop WordPress sites on any level then you really should think about coming along. It’s based in Kilkenny and run by Katherine Nolan and Sabrina Dent two of the great ladies of the Irish web-o-sphere so it’s going to be a kicking good event. It’s on 6th & 7th of March – check out the WordCamp website for details.

New Year – New Look

We’ve had a super busy January – and February shows no sign off slowing down either. In fact talking to people across a range of businesses from internet based to cafes to the local health food shop we’re noticing a definite pick up for Feb 2010. Great news and hardly surprising – most folk we know in business were never going to take this recession lying down and coupled with a bit more ‘consumer confidence’ the wheels of commerce are turning once again. Yay!

So general busy-ness in the new year delayed our own website redesign launch – but at the end of last week we finally put the finishing touches to our new look and launched on Thursday. We have gone with the warm, organic (organics are so in!!) tones of coffee and sepia and amber highlights- not quite chocolate but definitely more on par with our lovely business cards we’re so fond of handing out to anyone who’ll have ‘em. We have simplified our homepage layout too so that all you need to take in is a bit about what we do and our latest work automatically pulled in from the blog and presented on a lovely JavaScript slider. Very easy to update – there is no updating. The blog is very much the central focus of the website. After all that’s where all the action is.

So here’s to 2010 and as we like to say here at Cookie Web when faced with a challenge – bring it on!!

BTW – how cool is our cute little favicon!! :D

Dublin Meat Company – New Website

The Dublin Meat Company has a new website to promote their butchery business online. The Dublin Meat Co. is a 100% Irish family owned business who offer their customers around 30% savings on premium Irish meat compared to prices in supermarkets and other traditional stores. One of their major draws are their Weekly Specials which offer excellent value for their customers.

The family behind the Dublin Meat Company came to us with a vision of that their new website should be very eye catching and stand apart from other butcher’s websites; after all The Dublin Meat Company is doing something different. The company has received a lot of press since their opening and they felt it was important that the website made an impressive impression on new visitors to the website. Cookie Web worked hard and very closely with them and we are both very happy with the result:

…and from Brian O’Leary…

“On behalf of all at Dublin Meat Co I would like to thank Orla and Heidi for our new website. From first contact our dealings with cookieweb have been both very professional and friendly. Due to the fact that we are not very IT orientated we relied on the fact that we could pick the phone up to either Orla or Heidi and ask questions. For a small to medium sized company like ours dealing with cookieweb has been exactly what we required and I would have absolutely no hesitation recommending them to anyone looking for advice re websites.”

Paddy, David and Brian O’Leary are the father and sons team behind the Dublin Meat Company and take special pride in their product and motto: Premium Meat, Wholesale Prices. We felt that the lads should take center stage on the website – check out the weekly specials blackboard on the home page. Plus we hooked in a form to allow people to easily subscribe to the weekly specials SMS.

Journo Finally Gets a Blog

Orla had been bugging Ronan for years to get a website and when his acclaimed biography of Joe Dolan was released last year we practically had to beg him to let us build him something… a website, blog, landing page… anything in html that acknowledges your existence! Thankfully Orla finally convinced him that blog would suit him to a tee and then it just was up to me to apply a design that suited the man. Ronan is self described as “journalist, writer, wears glasses” – And this is what we used as our inspiration to create ronancasey.ie – we love it! More importantly so does Ronan and he’s taken to it like a duck to water: blogging before the website was even launched!

Ronan Casey - Click to launch website

Ronan Casey - Click to launch website

Ronan is a keen tweeter and we used a brilliant little plugin, Tweet Tools, that shows his latest tweets on the website and also automatically sends out a tweet when a new post is published. Hook that into Facebook and you’re all socialised up with minimum effort. Twittering is all about up to second conversation snippets – so if you do have a website than hooking in your twitter updates (tweets) is great way to keep your website fresh and up to date. We’ve recently done something similar to great effect on OurKilcock.ie interlinking the blog, twitter account and Facebook Fanpage.

Kavaleer's Garth & Bev are getting social

We are very excited about this – the gorgeous Garth & Bev from Kavaleer is on RTE’s The Den for the next few weeks. Tune in at 2.50pm! It is beautifully done and very engaging, especially for kids one year old and up. Of course the disclaimer here is that Gary Timpson, Garth & Bev’s producer is my hubby but I can still be objective! Sit your little ‘uns down in front of this and they’ll love it.

Cookie Web were engaged to create a holding page for the www.garthandbev.tv (there is a complete website pending) and to setup a Fanpage for the program on facebook. Facebook is a notorious for it’s poor interface design and this makes it a bit tricky for people to setup pages – once it is setup though it’s a doddle to update the page with pics, videos, links and news. Each time you update your legion of fans will received updates on their profile walls – it is a brilliant way to keep in touch with your audience. But, as always, only update when you have something genuinely interesting to put out there. You will run the risk of being de-fanned if you insist on updating daily (or even more horribly, hourly) with stuff only your Mum would want to hear about. Luckily Gary and Andy don’t suffer from being boring – and yes I am still being objective!! Check out the Garth and Bev Fanpage and please become a fan!

Of course we were honoured guests at the launch party on the 22nd of November at the fabulous Odessa Club in Dublin. It was a fantastic turnout – the place was literally jammed with kids stuffing themselves with popcorn and getting their themselves sketched by the resident caricaturist. But a hush fell over the noisy crowd when Garth and Bev started up on the big screen and all the kids (and adults as well) watched spellbound (and silent) as two 11 minute episodes played out. Check out the photos of the day on the Kavaleer blog. And don’t forget to watch the show … and become a fan!

How to Plan a (Business) Trip

Business trips – we love ‘em! Myself and Heidi can be spotted at nerdy events all over Ireland. In this industry it’s important to keep up to date with new technologies and advances in software, so we’re always on the lookout for good and interesting conferences. Plus we love to get away from the office every now and then, meet up with some of our peers and take a break from all our hard work (seriously, we’ve been working very hard this year – check out our portfolio).

Some events last for a day, others can span over a few days abroad: so a little bit of pre-planning on our part is essential. Here’s a couple of online tools we use organise our biz trips.

1. Information Store

Travel itineraries, addresses, phone numbers, maps, event schedules, accommodation, flight numbers… wouldn’t it be great to have everything in the one place? We are big fans of Google Sites because they enable us to do just that. When we’re planning a big trip, Cookie Web create a small, private website using Google Sites where we can store information about our trip. We can display our calendars, documents and other information related to the event. The location of the conference can be marked on a Google Map which is fed into the site. And we can even leave comments for each other with reminders and notes. Google sites are brilliant because they’re a doddle to set up and they’re free and you can choose who you share it with. We’ve used Google Sites for trips away with family and friends too because everyone can login and add their bit and see what’s happening – it really takes the pain out of organisation.

2. Accomodation

If the event is held over a number of days we need to organise somewhere to stay. The first port of call is the Tripadvisor website. I’m a big fan of this site and use it prior to booking accommodation for all personal and business trips. I love reading the reviews from other travellers and getting to see the ‘insider’ photos of the place. Don’t forget to check out the Things to Do section and the forum – lots of great tips and advice before you go. I recently looked up one of our clients – Marlinstown Court B&B and was impressed to see the great reviews they are getting. Well done Barbara and Larry!

And last but not least… bring the laptop, plenty of business cards and your best networking attitude!

Camara: Something old, something new.

Cookie Web are thrilled with the launch of the new Camara website.

Camara is our favourite charity – we love what they do with computers… Camara reuses Irish PCs destined for landfill and recycling, installs educational software and distributes them to learning places in countries throughout Africa. You can read about their wonderful work on their brand spanking, new, gorgeous website.

The new camara.ie website - click to launch website

The new camara.ie website - click to launch website

We choose to use WordPress for the website as most of the staff and volunteers were familiar with the application – and despite the size (60+ pages and literally 100′s of blog entries) WordPress handles itself very well and allows for inevitable expansion as Camara grows online and offline.

Cookie Web were so delighted to design the new website and worked closely with the Camara team to create a site architecture that would cater to a diverse range of visitors to the website. The design needed to be funky enough to appeal to a predominantly youthful, volunteering audience but also have a commercial aspect to appeal to the corporate visitors as well. We wanted the design to be modern and hip but longevity was a key element so the resulting design looks contemporary but not faddish and should stand the test time with out looking dated by the middle of 2010.

We’ll leave the final word with Eoghan Crosby, Camara’s Technical Directory:

“I would like to thank Cookieweb for our new website. We love the fresh look and the fact that it is expandable as our requirements grow. We are able to easily update our content as and when we like and to keep potential volunteers and customers readily informed about our services and events. Cookie Web’s personable and professional service meant that the process was swift, innovative and delivered at a very reasonable cost.”

Setting up a Community Website for Kilcock

(on a wee budget)

We’ve been sitting on this one for a little while because we wanted to watch it grow a little more before we blogged about it. I got the idea for creating the website back in 2008 – I really like my little village of Kilcock and think we have some great parts and real character but usually only found out about stuff happening driving past on the way into Dublin or reading about it two weeks later on the notice board at the bakers. So after much thought I decided to set something up that promoted the area of Kilcock and it’s local news, events and organisations.

Kilcock News & Events Website

Kilcock News & Events Website

The only thing I could really invest in the project was time. And with a business in it’s first year and an infant in her’s I couldn’t invest too much of that either! But it went ahead and it looks great if we do say so ourselves and it’s gaining momentum and page views!  I needed to make the setup of the website quick and easy and on a very low budget – so here was our approach:

We used WordPress of course – which is open source, free and has plenty of support options.

We themed our website with The Morning After WordPress template - it’s also free, looks tres stylish and with only a couple of custom modifications the website was up and running and looking great.

And then We Plugged away… is there anything WordPress can’t do? Well probably but make sure you check the plugin directory first.  On the site we’ve plugins for the gallery, rotating ads, thumbnail generation and seo.

We promoted the website with a Facebook Fanpage. We created a Fanpage for Our Kilcock and with a few weeks had over 350 fans that could keep abreast of Kilcock news and events without having to leave Facebook.

And finally… Build it and they will come?? Well actually no. Build it and then promote it – online and offline. And in this case offline promotion was very important – the approach was old-school but effective: phonecalls, advertising in the community noticeboards (butchers, bakery, local cafe etc), word of mouth, local networking groups etc. Online promo was through Facebook and a couple of other related websites. We’ve still got a lot more to do… It’s very much a work in progress but we’ve got steadily growing visitors and a couple of contributers who approached us in the early days with offers of content (we have our very own local chef who contributes fortnightly recipes featuring local produce) and photographs of Kilcock. These contributions are so valuable to the website – it keeps the content fresh and varied and relieves some of the pressure in delivering regular content. Several of the local businesses have also approached us to advertise on the website.

Check out the website for our local community – www.ourkilcock.ie.

Michael is also setting up a Community Supporting Agriculture (CSA) scheme which encourages members of the community to develop a partnership with the farmers and share the rewards and risks of farming fruit and vegetables. Local members of the community can make some sort of investment in the farm in return for e.g. a weekly box of vegetables, fruit from an apple tree you have sponsored, etc. If you’re interested in reading more about CSA schemes check out the Soil Association (UK) website and contact Michael if you’d like to be involved.

The www.organicproduce.ie website is another of our very popular ‘Oatmeal’ packages which is perfect for an individual or micro business. Mullingar Pitstop Website Launched

Another fabulous ‘Oatmeal Cookie’ solution – the Mullingar Pitstop website was launched this month. We’ve gone with a Formula One racing theme for this one as it suits the style of the guys in the workshop and ties in nicely with their logo.

Located in the Mullingar Business Park drop into the depot and Paddy or Trevor will inspect your tyres for free. And keep an eye on the Top Tips page for some great insights on maintaining healthy tyres and wheels – it seems those pesky potholes are playing havoc with my wheel alignment!

Check out their Facebook and Bebo pages for some great videos – I especially like the Bridgestone tyres one, so funny :)

Mullingar Auctions

It’s been a busy month for Cookie Web with a number of sites launched – so expect a bit more activity on the Cookie Blog this month as we show off a little. First up is the Mullingar Auction Rooms. Based in the Lynn Industrial Estate in Mullingar, County Westmeath, the Mullingar Auction Rooms has hosted 3 auctions since the beginning of the year. Michael Lynn, proprietor and auctioneer, realised the neccessity of promoting the auction dates and dispersing catalogues online through his own website rather than relying on drop-ins and mailouts. He was also keen to reach a another target market, the 25 – 35 years old group, and educate them on the wisdom of acquiring a pre-loved piece that looks unique, has a bit of history and if your lucky, you can pick up for song.

The website is fully content managed through WordPress. New auctions can be easily added, along with a gallery of selected thumbnails and the full list of items for auction (typically between 500-600 items per auction) available in PDF format. In the coming months Mullingar Auction Rooms will be launching a room of their own on eBay – we’ll let you know when that gets up and running. And a thank you is order to the Westmeath County Enterprise Board who funded part of the development of this website through their website grant scheme.

Auctions are great craic!

Having been a little ignorant and nervous around the concept of an auction, Orla and I are now converts. Last month I picked up a gorgeous garden seat and lovely edwardian hall stand – both at a bargain! (There are perks to a R****sion after all). It was dead easy too. Not able to stay around for the whole day, I simply placed a ‘commission bid’ on the piece I was interested in; I let my name and number and the maximum I was willing to fork out. Fortunately for me the piece came a whole €40 under what I was willing to pay. Add on the 15% commission and the beautiful hall stand was mine! The other more exciting way to do it of course is to bid in the auction and that’s easy too – you just wave your number and try not to get carried away.

If you haven’t experienced the buzz of an auction or if your house is looking a little too much like an Ikea showroom then head to the next event  in the Mullingar Auction Rooms.

Green Farm Foods Website Launched

Yum! Their cooked ham, roast beef, chicken and turkey ranges….. mmmm…. I’ve been sampling my way through the Green Farm Foods product selection since I first met with Ken and John earlier this year. I loved working on this project for a number of reasons:

  1. I love the design of the website (great work Heidi)
  2. Green Farm Food have rebranded this year and we were allowed sneak peaks throughout the transition from the old brand to the new traditional country feel. I’m sure you’ll agree it looks fantastic.
  3. And of course I have to mention the charming  and welcoming staff :)

Check out the website for some delish recipes, articles about healthy eating, their full range of products and upcoming promotions in-store.

New Business Cards

Finally we have business cards that we are happy to hand over to strangers and friends alike! There is nothing worse than apologising for the state of your cards as you hand them over.

Thank you Bernie and Lucy from Snap printing in Mullingar who have been very helpful in producing and assisting us, especially a certain print phobic designer, with getting our business cards looking and feeling (we think that the weight and texture of a biz card is quite important) great.

new business cards - yay!

Meeting for Real

Connecting with Tribes

Last night after a day of meetings in Dublin, Orla and I decided to end things on a high and attend the Connector event in The Church. The theme this time was ‘tribes’ and after we were entertained by excellent musicians we heard from a number of Irish tribes – Synth Eastwood (a strangely compelling performance), Le Chéile, Dublin Streets, boards.ie. D-light Studios, The Attic, Crewger, Culch.ie and Nouveau Vadge.

Boards.ie are a bit of an Irish phenomenon; they’ve been up and running for over a decade and last year won the grand prix at the Irish Web Awards. What I love about boards is that they facilitate an online ‘pub chat’ about any and every topic you can name or start a thread on. Last night boards.ie guy (I missed his name) spoke of a recent development of groups forming on boards.ie and then meeting up… in real life. He thought this was pretty cool and so do I. It reminded me of Adrian Avendano’s Meet for Real project which actively invites members to hook up with like minded people online and also at real events. (Actually the language is a bit strange isn’t it – why isn’t an online event real? And why is meeting up in real world referred to as offline – like offline is unconnected and so irrelevant…).

For many people, especially those not directly working in the ITC arena, their online social networks are usually comprised of people they know already in ‘real life’. By all means it is not uncommon for people to meet online – but obviously it takes much longer, and requires much more effort to build up a relationship with someone you have only interacted with through facebook, twitter and comments on their blog. Meeting someone at event, shaking their hand and having a brief conversation over a juice or coffee allows us to judge a person with all 6 senses and gives us so much more of an insight than if we were to read 100 facebook status updates or tweets. We humans crave social interaction after all and try as it might the coolest design and best JavaScript can’t make a video chat as engaging as a having a one on one in the local pub.

Find your Tribe

Recently Orla and I began attending B.O.S.S. in Mullingar. (BOSS stands for Business Owners Social Society – great name!)  To setup the group meetup.com was used. Visitors are invited to either start their own group or search for groups within a certain mileage of their home. Each week I get a digest in my inbox of groups (matching my interests) that are meeting up with a 25 miles of my area. Cool!

I think we’ll being seeing much more in the way of these tribes forming and interacting online with the objective of meeting up regularly or irregularly in ‘real’ life and I’d imagine they’ll have a longevity and member base that is stronger than a solely virtual group. Of course there has been plenty of groups in the Irish techie world meeting up regularly for the last few of years (Open coffee for example) but I love the idea that it’s spreading out to society at large and across a range of interests outside of tech.

P.S. Connector references this great video from TED on Tribes – worth watching.

Election Fever!

We’re delighted to show off another ‘Oatmeal Cookie’ solution – The Marcella Corcoran Kennedy website is live! Marcella is a Fine Gael Councillor representing the Ferbane electoral area and decided a few short weeks ago that it was time to get online and reach a wider audience. The website has a fresh & friendly design that reflects Marcella’s personable and approachable style. After the training session (when we can squeeze it into her manic, pre-election schedule) Marcella will be able to keep the website up to date with regular press releases and news and photos.

Life Challengers – Live

Noeleen Bontempi is a life & business coach, based in Celbridge and approached us at the Women in Business event in Newbridge, co. Kildare with the idea of creating a website for her that would showcase her courses, training and workshops. Noeleen also wanted the ability to publish articles on the website so her visitors could find a frequently updated source of inspiration and practical advice. With budgetary considerations in mind we knew that the Oatmeal Cookie Website Package would be the perfect solution.

Noeleen Botempi's Life Challengers Website

Noeleen Botempi's Life Challengers Website

The website also features an e-newsletter sign up form that allows visitors to receive Noeleen’s publications into their email inboxes. An e-newsletter is a wonderful way of encouraging visitors to return to your website and be further tempted to avail of your services.

Noeleen was kind enough to write a few words that described her experience with working with Cookie Web:

“I was looking to get a website created to support the workshop and course that I run for my life coaching business. I met up with Heidi after introducing myself to her at the Kildare Women in Business meeting. At our first meeting I explained what I wanted from the web site and we discussed a phased approach to creating the website that I wanted, within the budget I had.

“I was absolutely thrilled with the results as it was just what I wanted, the colours and design were perfect and the content is easy to manage. The website is simple to navigate, and it is not fussy. So far I have had a good response to the design. I would definitely recommend Cookie Web Consulting to anyone who is wanting to get a website built.”

Thank you Noeleen. Be sure to check out lifechallengers.com, especially if you are considering taking the time to reavaluate the goals and objectives of your business of personal life.

Westcove Farmhouse – Not your ordinary template based website.

We recently finished a website for Westcove Farmhouse, who offer  self catering accommodation in the Ring of Kerry with magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and lake. Proprietor Jane Urquart also runs a bakery (check out the gorgeous cakes) and a shop from the premises so you won’t be short of things to eat and do if you’re staying at Westcove.

opens Westcove Farmhouse website

The ‘Oatmeal Cookie’ Solution

This was our first ‘Oatmeal Cookie’ website package to go live so we wanted to show off just how lovely a template based website can look. Usually, if you mention website template to a web designer you get a lot of sniffy comments and rolling of eyes. And to be honest the majority of template websites out  there are pretty ordinary – we had to search long and hard for a template offering that we could proudly put our name too. If your sceptical take a good look at Westcove Farmhouse – you might be pleasantly surprised.

The website is built on the WordPress platform and instead of creating a fully customised design we used a template and designed a header image that really suited the Westcove Farmhouse style. We then applied a complimentary colour scheme. We hope you agree that the results are look  great.

Content Management

Using the WordPress framework allows  Jane  to update the content of her website quickly and easily. She can manage her keywords and descriptions, add images to the gallery and to individual pages and add extra pages if the website needs to expand.

The Oatmeal Cookie website package starts from just €550.

This covers:

  • a website of 6 pages
  • content management facility
  • design of header image & colour scheme
  • content migration of text for 6 pages (one image per page)
  • free hosting for one year
  • access to ‘how to’ training videos

Optional add ons include:

  • contact form
  • image gallery
  • extra pages
  • installation & configuration of WordPress plugins

Great value for an entry level website

So yes, the package offers amazing value!  However with that comes restrictions on design, layout and content and while this suits many small business and individuals down to the ground it’s worth noting that the Oatmeal Cookie website package is not for everyone. If you need to stand out from the crowd, have a company identity that needs particular requirements, need a shop or have a lot of content then the Oatmeal Cookie isn’t what you need. If you have any queries -please get in touch; we’re more than happy to chat about what we can do for you, your requirements and your budget.

We've been busy!

Thanks to our recent coverage on the TV and a number of regional papers Cookie Web has been quite busy of late – not that is valid excuse for neglecting the blog mind you! A couple of website have debuted online:

Camara’s Charity Cup

Camara Charity Cup Website

Camara Charity Cup

Another great idea from the dynamic team at Camara. The Camara Charity Cup pitches Irish companies against each other in a Fantasy Football style GAA Championship competition. Companies select teams at the start of season and win points for each games win. The companies also take part in weekly quizzes and point prediction which also allow companies to accrue points. The competition winners and runner ups are in line for some fantastic prizes. Check out the website and get in touch with Camara if you’d like your company to get involved.

Matt’s Endless Bender

Global Bender

Global Bender

Matt has had another brainwave and come up with Global Bender; a brilliant way to mark the halfway point of his 12 month round the world Odyssey of back to back yoga challenges (that is Bikram yoga everyday for a whole year). For the month of June he is calling on all Bikram Yoga Studios and yogis to take part in a worldwide 30 day Yoga Challenge. And believe me, to endure 30 days of Bikram yoga (let alone 365 days) is quite a feat. To get involved please check out the Global Bender page on Matt’s Website and be sure to check out Matt’s blog while your there.

Cookie Web designed the Global Bender logo and this groovy poster that participating studios can print out and display. As the Matt’s website was created in WordPress we were able to add new page, including a registration form, quickly and easily.

Back to School – SYOB Course

Earlier this year I enrolled in the Start Your Own Business course run by Bernadette Farrell of ACE Training in association with the Westmeath County Enterprise Board. This is a fantastic course and I highly recommend it to any of you that are considering starting up a venture of your own.

Back in the classroom again, I tried to tone down my nerdy tendencies for fear of bullying from my classmates. Bernadette went easy on us and kept our homework to a minimum. We covered some great topics on how to research and price a product, marketing and advertising, manage our basic accounts, and we were also told about tax and legal issues we should be aware of.

The course ran for 6 weeks, with a 3 hour class every Tuesday night. We covered 6 modules:

  1. Getting started
  2. Tax for Start-Ups and Bookkeeping
  3. Costing & Pricing
  4. Managing Cashflow
  5. Research Module
  6. Advertising and Promotion

With only 3 hours a week, there were no in-depth studies into each of the subjects. We received just the right amount of information to educate us on what we should be doing. And pointers on where to go to find out more.

Bernadette has some great tips – here are some of my faves:

  • Set up a separate bank account for your business – keep business transactions separate from your personal finances
  • Put some cash away every month to pay your VAT bill
  • If you have cashflow problems – recognise and deal with them

and lastly, my favourite of them all

Cookie Web on TV3's Ireland AM!

Heidi on Ireland AM!

Heidi on Ireland AM!

Wow! What an opportunity to promote our company! Despite initial nerves Heidi chatted easily with TV3 hosts Sinead and Aidan about the trials and tribulations of setting up a business in the recession. Check out the snippet on the Ireland AM website.

Cookie Web applauds Ireland AM for dedicating a spot on their Friday show for showcasing new Irish businesses, especially the small ones. This is the kind of good news stories we need to boost economic confidence around the nation.

Bizcamp Limerick

The weekend just past does a lot to make one feel a wee bit more confident about the CEC. And it’s not all down to some well spent hours in Limerick at Bizcamp, but, like many I’m basking in the feel good rays brought on by some awesome Irish sporting accomplishments. I know I’m a blow in, but being an Australian I can certainly appreciate a good sporting moment. And it’s so heartening to see ya’ll out and cheering and full of happiness and enthusiasm, because god knows the last couple of months have been full of a lot pessimism and woe. All of this celebration is bound to rub off onto our daily toil and it could be just the push we need to get things moving back on up. (And to top it all off Liverpool FC are now sitting very pretty at just a point behind…)

Back to the biz…

We were looking forward to this day out at Bizcamp – especially because it’s about starting up and entrepreneurship with a focus on tech. And lots of bloggers and other industry peers were going to be attending or giving talks and it’s always nice to put a face to tweeter.

We found a lot of good stuff in these talks in particular:

Simple Planning for Startups by Ger Hartnett

Tight, practical, to the point – just the way we like it. Much of the stuff covered was stuff we all know but seldom do, so the refresher was much appreciated. And we particularly liked the fact that the suggestions were simple, low tech and and used free software, (Ger did flash up a screen on his product Coclarity which we’re yet to check out fully).

- check your email only twice a day.
This ones a bit tough. I’ve already checked it 3 times already and it’s only 11.30am. Will try harder.

- make a list
No problems in this department – Orla and I are list queens and will attest to ‘the to do list’ as indispensible.

- weekly & monthly plans
We especially liked the butchers paper & post it weekly plans.

- good reads for better time management
David Allen
– ‘Getting things done’ with a focus on simple free tools like the pen and paper.
Tim Ferriss – ’4 hour work week’ – haven’t heard of this one but it sounds impressive :)

and finally…

- FART

Human Interaction by Adrian Avendano

An interesting talk from one of the guys who started www.meetforreal.ie which looked at human interaction from a hunter gatherer tribe perspective. The idea that in our last 2 million years of evolution humans have generally lived in tribes and small groups gives thought to why the modern human city dweller may struggle to interact successfully with potentially 1000′s of other humans. The reason I feel fearful or at best uncomfortable joining in the conversation with a group of people I don’t know at a party or event is because, in a nutshell, I am not socially evolved enough for this to be a natural experience. Adrian then says that we need to develop ‘hard core social skills’. I tried to keep this in mind as I wandered, sandwich in hand, through a sea of tables in the cafe at lunchtime.

What I particularly liked about this talk was the Pick up artist tips:

  • select a target
  • approach and open
  • demonstrate high value
  • create a personal connection
  • keep the mystery flowing
  • indicators of interest
  • bounce

This is so nerdy!! I love it!

Anton Mannering spoke about Networking

As a newly formed small business we’re big believers in networking and Anton’s talk was excellent and immediately applicable to our networking practice.

universal laws of networking
- abundance
- reciprocity
- giving value first

“70% of success in life is showing up” – Woody Allen

some skills
- listen
- always on
- use peoples names
- ask questions
- nobody is a nobody
- not everyone will like you

other strategies
- give recognition (use names)
- empower others (i have info -> pass it on)
- be a role model
- strategic alliances

online presence
- writing blogs
- networks, linkedin, twitter, googlability
- coverage, blog, linkedin, business cards,
- reference

Check out the full slide list on Anton’s blog.

Some Thoughts on the Event….

The Limerick Bizcamp was very worthwhile and we’d recommend it to anyone starting or having started a business. It was positive about the economical situation and offered real and practical (yes, I know I have said practical a lot) advice for running a business, chasing success and staying motivated. 2 things I would suggest for improvement would be:

  • Length of talks: 30 minutes seemed to be too short for quite a few of the talkers and with the additional time taken for people to leave, make their way to the next room and get settled. The talks I attended either went way over time (which is quite rude I think!) or cut too short by the late starting time. Perhaps consideration of extending talk to time to 40 mins or 45 mins?
  • More chance for Networking: as we now know for sure, most people have a tough time with cold interaction – it takes us a little time to warm up. We also know that networking is practically essential for businesses. Perhaps subsequent events could force the issue a little more with a speed networking (or something a little more informal) room?
